Philippians 4:6-7:
6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
The Bible tells us to not worry, but we all do.
What are things that you worry about?
Why do you worry about those things?
An important thing to consider is that God created our emotions. That means that nervousness and worrying are emotions that God gave us.
There must be a good reason why God gave us these emotions, so is there a purpose in us worrying and being anxious?
Are there things you worry about or feel anxiety about that make sense that you feel that way?
Our anxiety tells us four things:
- It tells us what we value.
Often, the reason that we are anxious about something is because it is important to us. We are fearful because that thing could be lost or taken from us. Maybe it already has been taken from us or has been taken before and has been returned.
What kinds of things do you value?
Do you see that your value on those things actually drives your anxiety?
- It tells us how we view God.
Jesus told His disciples in Matthew 6:25-27:
25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?
Jesus understood that people had worries and concerns. Was He being calloused by telling them not to worry?
What do you think Jesus is saying in this passage that tells us about how we should view God?
Do you believe that God is big enough to help you overcome your worry or to remove it altogether?
- It tells us about our trust level with God.
This point is very similar to the previous one, however, it is different in this way. You may believe that God can do anything, but do you believe He will do it for you?
Trust in God is one of the most essential parts of what we have learned so far. The question to ask yourself is if you trust God to help you in your struggles and to protect the things that you value?
- It tells us if it has purpose.
When we have fear and anxiety and overcome them, we then have a powerful testimony to help others. We can then show them that God can lead them through the fears as well.
Do you know some people who are battling and worried about the same things as you?
Can the things you are going through help you to help others in their worrying?
What can we do as Christians to help us to overcome anxiety and worry?
The Bible explains that through prayer and supplication (asking others), we can have a piece that goes beyond understanding. Let’s pray for one another about the things that cause us to be anxious.
